Breast reduction
surgery, also known as reduction mastopexy, can dramatically
reshape breasts that are too large or disproportionate. By
reducing the size and weight of the breast, symptoms such as
neck and back pain can be alleviated. This procedure can also
reduce skin discomfort and irritation from beneath the breast
and bra straps. Overlarge breasts can also result in severe
overall disproportion in a woman’s body.
Women may also consider breast reduction surgery if current
breast size causes breathing difficulties, poor posture or
interference with normal daily activities and exercise.
Breast reduction surgery is considered reconstructive surgery
and can sometimes be covered by medical insurance. You will need
to ask our staff for the information after Dr. Messa has
examined you.
THE SURGERY
Dr. Messa performs the procedure under general anesthesia, in
our state-of-the-art, fully accredited (AAASF) surgical suite,
or at another licensed accredited outpatient surgical facility
or hospital. Lasting approximately two to three hours, incisions
are made similar to an anchor or inverted keyhole encompassing
the area around the nipple-areolar complex (the pigmented area)
and extended vertically below the nipple and in the fold
underneath the breast. Excess breast tissue, fat and skin are
removed where the incisions are made. The nipple-areolar complex
may then be moved and/or repositioned to create the desired
natural-looking breast shape and contour. Because breast
reduction surgery is major surgery, some scarring is expected;
however, will generally fade over time.
THE RECOVERY
Breast reduction surgery is usually performed on an outpatient
basis. Patients go home in a bra with a sterile dressing placed
over the incision lines. The bra is worn for support as much as
possible for the next two to three weeks. As with the breast
lift procedure, sutures are located beneath the skin surface (subdermao)
in multiple layers to reapproximate the skin edges more
precisely and absorb over time as you heal. Initial discomfort
or pain is controlled with oral medication. Light cardiovascular
activities may be resumed in seven to ten days; however, you
should avoid strenuous exercise for several weeks and should be
extremely gentle with your breasts for at least four weeks
following surgery.
If you have been concerned by the size, shape, or appearance of
your breasts that have hindered physical activity or caused you
embarrassment, or affected your self-image, breast reduction may
be the answer for you. Call Dr. Messa today for your private
consultation. This could be the most important decision you make
this year. Call (954) 659-7760 today.
